Commentaries

Commentaries on nō plays aimed at providing definitions of the vocabulary and annotations of the literary and religious references in plays. What started first as marginalia—notes on meanings of words and phrases alongside the lines in chant books—later developed into the first official commentary collection, Utai no shō (Commentary on Chant Books), completed at the end of the 16th century. The authors of the commentaries were erudite scholars and took painstaking efforts to clarify obscurities in play texts.
